Mercedes unveils the most luxurious Unimog yet
Mercedes Benz Unimog - Life in Classic
A New Chapter for an Off-Road Icon
Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks has introduced a show vehicle that pushes the Unimog into new territory. Built with Hellgeth Engineering to mark the Unimog’s upcoming 80th anniversary, the concept blends extreme capability with premium comfort. The goal is clear: keep the soul of the “Universal-Motor-Gerät” while inviting a new kind of driver into the cabin.
Although it is a one-off for now, Mercedes plans to put the vehicle in the hands of real customers. This test phase will reveal how the concept performs away from the spotlight. It will also help the brand decide whether a limited production run makes sense.
As a result, the show vehicle serves as both a celebration and a pilot program. It suggests what the next evolution of the Unimog could look like without compromising its purpose-built character.
Engineering That Conquers Any Terrain
The project starts with the Unimog U 4023, a model trusted in demanding civilian and military roles. Its hardware remains at the core of the concept, and with good reason. The U 4023’s portal axles create outstanding ground clearance, while a flexible frame allows impressive wheel articulation over uneven ground.
Additionally, selectable all-wheel drive and locking differentials on both axles equip the truck for severe conditions. Drivers can dial in traction as surfaces change, whether on rock, snow, or soft sand. Therefore, the luxury layer never dilutes the Unimog’s essence. It still tackles work that would stop regular trucks cold.
Despite the premium focus, utility stays high. The concept keeps a payload of up to 6,000 kilograms, so capability matches the design. In short, it is still a Unimog first, even as comfort increases.
Six-Cylinder Power and Smarter Drivability
Under the cab, Mercedes swaps the standard four-cylinder for the 7.7-liter OM 936 inline-six turbodiesel. The engine produces about 300 horsepower and delivers massive torque. That output transforms how the truck pulls, climbs, and cruises.
Moreover, the team optimized transmission tuning to pair with the new engine’s character. Shifts come smoother and more precisely, which improves control on trails and reduces fatigue on long roads. As a result, drivers feel more confident in technical terrain and more relaxed on the highway.
The upgraded powertrain does not erase the Unimog’s utilitarian spirit. Instead, it expands the operating range. You can load it, tow with it, and still cover distance with less strain. For a vehicle built to go anywhere, that balance matters.
Rugged Looks With Premium Cues
On the outside, the concept borrows inspiration from Mercedes-Benz’s luxury SUVs without losing its work-ready vibe. A double cab painted in matte grey sets a modern tone, while LED headlights and taillights deliver crisp illumination. The stance is confident, and the proportions still speak “tool,” not toy.
Furthermore, the truck rides on aluminum beadlock wheels wrapped in aggressive all-terrain tires. This hardware signals intent, whether the route leads to a trailhead or across a construction site.
