Nationwide Recall Targets F-150 Transmission Hazard

Ford has announced a major safety recall for nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks in the United States. The action addresses a transmission defect that can cause an unexpected downshift into a lower gear at highway speeds. Such a sudden change can sharply cut wheel speed. As a result, the rear tires may slide or lock, which increases crash risk.

The company disclosed the recall in April 2026 after reviewing field reports and regulatory findings. Ford says it is acting to reduce the chance of uncommanded downshifts and related loss of control. While most trips will never encounter the problem, the potential outcome is serious. Therefore, owners should check their vehicles immediately and schedule repairs as soon as parts and software are available.

Which Trucks Are Affected and How to Check

The recall covers 2015 through 2017 model-year F-150 light trucks built from March 12, 2014, to August 18, 2017. Only vehicles fitted with the 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission are included. Other powertrain configurations are not part of this action. If you drive an F-150 from these years, you should confirm whether your truck is involved.

What Causes the Sudden Downshift

Investigators traced the issue to a possible loss of signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module. Over time, heat and vibration can degrade electrical connections within the transmission lead frame. When the signal drops or becomes erratic, the control module may interpret an incorrect gear position. Consequently, it can command a downshift into second gear even when the vehicle is traveling at high speed.

Ford reports hundreds of related warranty claims. The company and federal regulators are also reviewing at least one crash with two injuries that may be linked to this condition. The defect does not affect every trip or every vehicle in the population. However, the mechanical and electrical environment can worsen the problem as components age. Therefore, Ford is deploying a software and hardware remedy across the affected fleet.

Warning Signs and Safe Driving Advice

In many cases, an unexpected downshift may occur without notice. Even so, some trucks display early warning signs. The malfunction indicator lamp or a wrench icon may appear in the instrument cluster. In addition, the transmission may behave erratically, including brief shifts into neutral or unexpected upshifts. Any of these symptoms should prompt an immediate inspection.

If a sudden downshift happens while driving, hold the steering wheel firmly and keep the vehicle pointed straight. Then, ease off the accelerator and avoid abrupt braking. When it is safe, pull over and stop the vehicle. After stopping, contact your dealer or roadside assistance for guidance. Ford dealers will update the powertrain control module software to improve fault detection and prevent an uncommanded downshift. The update adjusts how the system validates sensor inputs and manages gear changes under suspicious conditions. If diagnostic trouble codes show a failing transmission lead frame, dealers will replace that component. All recall work will be completed at no cost to owners.

Dealers began receiving instructions in mid-April 2026. Ford plans to mail interim owner notices starting April 27, 2026, followed by final remedy notices in July 2026.
