Old Iron, New Energy: London to Brighton Veteran Run Adopts Sustainable Fuel
The world’s longest-running motoring event will write a new chapter next year. On Sunday, November 2, 2025, the RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run will, for the first time, offer a sustainable, high-performance fuel blend called Classic Veteran 80 to participating crews. The move shows that safeguarding automotive heritage and caring for the planet can go hand in hand.
Purpose-built for pre-1905 machines, Classic Veteran 80 requires no mechanical changes—vital for preserving historically significant engines. Developed by Sustain, the fuel uses second-generation bio-components sourced from waste streams such as discarded food and agricultural byproducts. Rather than introducing new fossil carbon, it recirculates carbon previously absorbed by plants, reducing the environmental impact without diminishing the character or capability of century-old vehicles.
Just as importantly for veteran cars, the blend is ethanol-free. Ethanol can corrode early fuel systems and seals, and it often complicates cold starts. The new formula protects delicate components and can improve starting and running in cool conditions, offering owners greater confidence on the road.
This season’s rollout follows successful trials over recent years, including with entries from the Royal Automobile Club. Drivers reported no discernible difference in power or drivability versus regular pump petrol—some even noted smoother performance. That feedback gave organizers the assurance to make the sustainable option widely available for 2025.
RAC Chairman Duncan Wiltshire summed up the sentiment behind the shift, noting that the transition was straightforward and, in some cases, beneficial. He emphasized that innovative fuels can keep yesterday’s cars on tomorrow’s roads, proving that the oldest vehicles can contribute to a cleaner future without sacrificing authenticity.
The decision resonates across the classic community, offering a practical path to enjoy historic motoring responsibly. It also aligns with a milestone year: the 2025 Run honors the 125th anniversary of the pioneering 1000 Mile Trial of 1900. Nearly 400 pre-1905 cars are expected to set off from London’s Hyde Park and make the 60-mile journey to Brighton’s Madeira Drive—a rolling celebration of ingenuity, now powered by progress.
